Brighouse is the major shopping district of Richmond, named after Samuel Brighouse, an early settler. In 1864 he purchased nearly 700 acres, in what is now downtown Richmond, where he raised thoroughbred horses and cattle. The old city hall, Minoru Park and Richmond Centre Mall were built on the land he previously owned. A horse racetrack was built on his property as well (now Lansdowne Mall). Samuel Brighouse was one of the petitioners to incorporate Richmond as a municipality.
